Cape Verde

The Cape Verde Islands have been independent from Portugal since 1975 and now form their own state. Approximately half a million Cape Verdeans live on the archipelago, with more than half residing on the island of Santiago.

The islands are located 1,800 kilometers north of the equator and 1,600 kilometers south of the Canary Islands. They are 700 kilometers from the African mainland and 2,600 kilometers from South America.

The official language of Cape Verde is Portuguese, while the national language is Cape Verdean Creole. However, the Creole varies across the individual islands.

Thanks to their politically stable environment and the mild Atlantic climate, the Cape Verde Islands are a popular destination for tourists.

In 2017, Cape Verde ranked 27th out of 180 countries in the Press Freedom Index published by Reporters Without Borders. This placed Cape Verde ahead of France, the United Kingdom, and the United States in terms of press freedom.
